The cinema-goers of Nicaragua have the opportunity to watch films in 12 state cinemas, and we strive to ensure that the programs shown there are optimal in their content and artistic quality and give an idea of the high achievements of world cinematography. In total, there are 150 cinemas in the country, which, minus the state network, are owned by four private rental companies. However, the activities of our repertory commission, which classifies all films intended to be shown in Nicaragua, also apply to private rentals.
Before the revolution, the vast majority of films shown in the country's cinemas were of North American production. Currently, films made in Cuba and other socialist countries can be seen in state cinemas. For example, we have released such famous films as "Lucia", "Rancheador", "Elpidio Valdez", organized a retrospective screening of the works of the oldest Polish director Jerzy Kavalerovich, we are releasing the film "Dersu Uzala", retrospective cinema programs of the Soviet Union and Hungary.
I would like to emphasize that in our conditions, it is extremely important to demonstrate films printed on narrow film using film slides. For Nicaragua, this is also significant from a political point of view, since such a rental makes it possible to introduce a wide audience to cinema, especially in rural areas, where cinema had previously had virtually no distribution. When setting up a new film distribution system in the country, we cooperate with a number of public organizations and with the army, we consider this activity in the light of the tasks of political and aesthetic education of our people.
Public organizations — trade unions, women's organizations, and others — cooperate with our repertoire commission. There are still many films made in the United States in Nicaragua today, and it must be admitted that most of them have minimal artistic value. Therefore, the repertory commission has to resort to banning a number of paintings, primarily those that contain slander against our revolution and the global revolutionary process; in addition, we prohibit the rental of pornographic films. The decision of the repertoire commission does not allow the screening of the American film "The Deer Hunter," which slanders the heroic Vietnamese people and distorts the historical meaning of their liberation struggle. In general, the work of the commission is structured in such a way as to resist the imperialist expansion and the policy of neocolonialism in the field of culture directed against independent Latin American States.
The young Nicaraguan cinema is establishing ties with the cinematography of the Soviet Union. In our conversation with the Chairman of the USSR State Film Committee, we discussed some aspects related to future cooperation in the field of cinema. In the near future, it is necessary to clarify specific aspects of this cooperation, which will be carried out in accordance with the recently concluded intergovernmental agreement providing for cultural exchange between our two countries. We are confident that this cooperation will bring positive results, and that ties with Soviet cinematography will be an important aid in the formation and development of young Nicaraguan cinema.
